Not So Sure I Should Have Done That…and other Random Thoughts..

I was awake at 7:30 and decided I would go through with my 3 mile run!

Since I haven’t run since the Disneyland half marathon, it took me awhile to locate all my running gear.  But before long, I was outside ready for the challenge of a first run since my injury.  First thing I noticed is the weather is a lot cooler in the mornings now than what it was when I was training just a  month ago!

Some random thoughts during today’s run:

  • OMG, I can’t breathe.  I hate how quickly the lungs get out of shape.  It’s only been a month, though.  WTH!?!
  • Seriously, I sound like someone who has never run before, I’m going to wake up the  neighborhood with this heavy breathing-NOT sexy.
  • Wow, the entire side of that roof is tiled in solar panels.  I thought that was against HOA?!
  • Yeap, there’s the ache in my leg, exactly where it was for Disneyland.  This blows.
  • Why did I say 3 miles instead of 1 mile?!
  • That is an awful lot of pigeons in the middle of the park.  Nasty birds.  Hasn’t anyone figured out a way to make those vial creatures go extinct??
  • I’m sorry, Katy Perry, but I am nothing like a firework right now but thanks for thinking of me, girl!!
  • These new shoes make my feet sore.
  • Poor girl, if she got a better running bra she wouldn’t have to hold down the girls while she ran.
  • So excited for my coffee date with M this morning…I hope I don’t require a wheelchair to get in and out of the building.
  • K is gonna be mad at me if I’m limping all over the house later today..I did promise not to hurt myself!  Whoops!
  • Perhaps it’s not the shoes making  my feet sore but the fact I haven’t run in a month?

I ran/walked 3 miles in 42:11 minutes, a 14:03 minute mule mile pace.  I’m gonna shower and tape up my leg to see if that helps in any way.

Do I Dare to Run??

I missed my chiro appointment on Friday because I had to work late.  So I do not have doctor’s clearance to run.

But…I’m thinking of going for a 3 mile run in the morning.  I vow to do the following:

  • Run slowly..it’ll be more of what I call a “runner’s shuffle”.
  • Head home the moment I feel any kind of pain.

I just gotta get back out there and run again.  The bike lane is calling my name – it misses me and I miss it!

Due to my extremely hectic work schedule this past week, I didn’t do any of the workouts I had planned to do.  Lesson learned…the last week of the month will require morning workouts – whether I like it or not.

Do you think I’m crazy to attempt a small run without doctor’s “okay”?

She Works Hard For Her Money!

Been so busy at work this week.  One minute I look at the clock and it’s 9 am, the next minute it’s already 10:55 am!  Before I know it, it’s well past 3 pm!!

I worked 11.5 hours today.  I.am.exhausted.  But it’s a good kind of exhausted – I am happy to be working!

Good thing I put dinner in the crock pot before I went to work so D and K were good to go on the dinner front.

And I just remembered I was supposed to go to a happy hour tonight.  Poop!!!

I’ll be happy when I get that pay check reflecting all this OT!!  Wonder what new running gear I should reward myself with?

Leg is feeling good.  I see the chiro tomorrow night and *fingers crossed* she clears me to run a bit this weekend.  I’d be happy with an okay for a 3 mile run…

Planning the Week..

We did our grocery shopping yesterday afternoon after I planned out the weekly menu:

I plan to do upper body work outs Tuesday and Thursday.  Walk 1 mile Wednesday and Friday.  The leg is still sore but I might try to run/walk that 1 mile…don’t tell my chiro!

Work will be hectic this week so I may have to get up and do my workouts in the morning as opposed to the evening – when I prefer to work out.  It’s really hard for me to get up early in the morning so this will be a challenge!  I’m open to a challenge!

We Found Nemo!

Yesterday we tried a new to us cafe called Hangar Cafe for breakfast.  While you eat, you can watch the small planes taking off and landing at the small airport.  K loved it, kept turning around in his chair to watch the different airplanes.  I ordered a vegetable omelette and was thrilled when you could actually identify the vegetables!  Sometimes I get veggie omelettes from places and it begs the question, “Where are the veggies?!!”

After breakfast we went in search of Nemo!

Happy to report we found him and he’s back home safe and sound with his dad!

D has to wear an eye patch for a couple of hours every day to correct a lazy eye situation.  We discovered last night we are out of patches but, no need to fear, mommy to the rescue!

I haven’t run in 3 weeks and I can tell you that my schedule is all out of whack!  I’m nervous about doing any lower body exercise so I am thinking I’ll use a couple of my workout videos this week to focus only on my upper body.  I need to do something!!!

Sunsets and Tens Units

Remember how I bought new running kicks on Tuesday with plans to run on Wednesday?

I had rested my injury for 2 full weeks post half marathon as instructed by the chiropractor!

Wednesday morning, I woke up and my leg was sore.  WTH?!  I have done ZERO exercise and only ran on Tuesday long enough to test out 3 pairs of shoes.  I ran for, what, 2 minutes?!

Fast forward to Friday and the leg is still sore.  I went back to my chiropractor tonight and she told me that when you injure the smaller tendons and muscles, it can take awhile to heal.  How long?  6-8 weeks!!!!!!!!  You can imagine my facial expressions but she quickly assured me that doesn’t mean I have to stop running.

She hooked me up to the tens unit with a heavy focus on my left buttocks and hamstring.  Gotta admit…it felt good!

Final verdict…less soreness in my leg after 15 minutes on the tens unit and an adjustment.  Doctor’s orders – I can jog 1/2 a mile a day.  I told her I don’t even have to dress in my running clothes for that – I can just do that in my stupid jeans!

My chiropractor said us runners are funny people and when we’re told we can’t run we have very obvious reactions to it.   Imagine that!

At least there was this amazing sunset to greet me as I left the doctor’s office!

Of course, I’d much rather be running while seeing this amazing sunset!

My next half marathon in November 4th.  My chiro said I should consider buying a tens unit so I can hook it up to myself after some of my harder runs.  SERIOUSLY considering that.

Nothing More Exciting Than New Running Kicks!

I had to leave work early this afternoon to take D to an appointment with her opthamologist.  We got good news there and I was relieved to hear it.  2 days in a row for good news…whoo hoo!  Yay for the home team.

After her appointment, we went over to my favorite running store, Run AZ!

I love supporting local, small businesses.  I bought my very first pair of running shoes here 2 years ago!  I told the sales girl that I didn’t want to stay in the brand they sold me last time, and the time before.  I am done with that brand.  She had me try on 2 different pairs of Asics.  Then she brought out a pair of the brand I refuse to wear again.  I tried them on, to appease the sales girl.  Even though they felt good in the store, it just nagged in the back of my head that I didn’t want to go that route again! So I settled on these babies!

I was stoked to see the store sells Honey Stingers!  These are definitely something I’ve wanted to try but haven’t seen anywhere.  So I picked up a packet.  They had a few flavors but I settled on cherry!

I love new running stuff!!!

Celebrate Good Times…C’mon!!

It’s a celebration!!!

Remember how happy I was on August 20th when I got a job?  I was pretty stoked.  What I didn’t explain at the time was that it was a contract job and came with a pretty hefty pay cut…but that wasn’t very important to me as I was just happy to be going back to work!

Fast forward to today…I got offered a permanent job with the same company and…a promotion!!!  The cherry on top of this delicious sundae..a comfortable bump in pay!!

I have always, always, always believed that God had a plan, He is in control, and He would provide.  Prayers answered!!!

Tonight, K, D and I had a celebratory dinner and beer (for me and K…Mr. Pipp for D) at ? – you guessed it – San Tan Brewing Co!!!

Today brought a huge sense of relief for me and my family!!  So thankful to God and all His blessings!!

Tomorrow I will be going to my favorite running store to purchase a new pair of running shoes..going to test out Brooks, Asics and my original brand, Pearl iZumi!

I plan to run again, post injury, on Wednesday. I am really looking forward to running again.  I have another half marathon November 4th and to celebrate my new permanent job, I’m going to sign up for a 10k on Thanksgiving!!!

BTW..for anyone keeping track (like me) I got offered a permanent position 2 months to the day I lost my other job.  Yay!!!

The I’s of Me

Injured.  Injury started 8/23.  I really pissed it off with the Disneyland half marathon on 9/2.  Doctor’s orders on 9/7 for no exercise 2 weeks from the time of the half marathon.  On Wednesday, 9/12 I felt absolutely no pain in my leg all day long.  Been going strong ever since.

Ill.  Mid morning on Thursday, 9/13 my nose started running.  Perhaps it felt sympathy for my legs not being able to run because it started running and would not stop!  I left work early on Friday because I was running a fever.  I’m still sick.

Inclined.  Before I run again, I need to visit my local running store to pick up a new pair of shoes. I’d like to return to my running routine on Wednesday…nice and slow like the doctor said!

I miss Boston.  The blog world is all a-buzz about Boston right now.  I have my fingers crossed for many of you that you’ll get in!!!  Chances are excellent I will never run Boston…for 1) I don’t have a desire to run a marathon  – a requirement to qualify and 2) I am a slow runner – people finish full marathons in the time it takes me to run a half!

D is Arizona born and raised so in October 2010, I took her to visit my sister in Boston for the very first time.  I absolutely love Boston, fall is my favorite time of year there, and I think everyone should visit this amazing city!  To further spike the Boston marathon fever, below are a couple of my favorite pictures from our first 24 hours in Boston October 2010.

I Crossed the Finish Line of the Boston Marathon…

On Monday I emailed K and told him I felt like I was depressed.  His response, “cause you are injured?”  My response was no.

Why was I depressed?

I wasn’t sure. I just wasn’t feeling happy.

Maybe it was because it was the anniversary of 9/11?  I’m not going to go in to all the reasons why 9/11 is so important to me but..9/11 changed my life completely.  Yesterday, I allowed myself to feel sad.  I watched the History channel all evening and cried when I wanted to cry.  I don’t think there’s anything wrong with allowing yourself to relive that day and feel whatever emotions you feel – as long as you don’t cause harm or pain to anyone else!

A couple of things I’ve been doing this week is returning to the eating habits I had before my unemployment.  This week I’ve had my Fage yogurt, my vegetable soup, and my veggies as snacks during the day.  I haven’t paid a great deal of attention to my eating habits since I lost my job – I’ve had other things to consider.  But maybe I can help this “funk” I’m in by being better about what is going in to my mouth?!

Since I saw the chiro on Friday and she told me “no exercise,” I have followed her orders to the T!  I have always listened to every word and instruction my chiro has given and I bounce back as quickly as she says I will!  There have been days I’ve been tempted to go for a walk or come home and do some pilates but she said “NO EXERCISE” and being the rule follower that I am…I have done NO EXERCISE!!!  *gasp*  But today…there has been a significant difference in my leg.  There has been ZERO pain, some soreness at times but no pain!!  Do I dare to dream there may be a run in my near future?

I keep reading from people on Twitter and in blogs that fall is hitting the rest of the country.  In Phoenix..we don’t have fall.  We just go from “freakin’ hot as H.E. Double Hockey Sticks” to you can actually stand outside for a moment without bursting in to flames.  I love fall, especially in New England.  For the past two years, I was able to visit my sister in Boston around this time of year.  In fact..last year, I crossed the Boston Marathon as my sister watched on in hysterics!

Because I will never cross the finish line in the actual race, I went out on to the street, facing oncoming traffic and “crossed” the finish line.  True Story!!!
