My Leg is Fired or Not!

I haven’t run since Sunday hoping the rest, icing, KT taping,  foam rolling and the compression sock wearing would beat my leg in to submission.

Fat chance.

Today at the expo I stopped by the KT Tape booth for more tape.  A very informative man at the booth helped me out, asked me about my “injury”.  BTW, it was like a stake through my heart for him to use that word – injured.  Am I injured?!?  I hadn’t thought of myself as being injured but I guess when you walk with a just might be!

So I described my leg issue and even though I talked about the pain starting in my foot, feeling it in my calf and settling on the inside of my thigh..he kept referring to the hamstring.  I had taped the back of my leg earlier in the week, okay, okay – K taped my leg, but it didn’t seem to help.  I love KT Tape…when I’ve used it before, it feels like the tape takes my little boo-boo and just holds it so tenderly, taking the pain away.  The guy at the booth told me to be sure to place the tape directly over the pain in my leg and use more than 1 piece if I don’t feel that relief.  So..I can’t wait to shower and strike the pose for K to administer new tape to my leg!

We run the Cars Land 5K Rally in the early morning.  D is finally excited for the race.  Yay!!!  I may not be back for a blog posting until after the weekend but if you’re following me on Twitter @RunsInBikeLane then you can keep up with me on our adventures.

Oh!  The weather here in So CA is actually rather warm and a lot of runners seem really concerned about the heat.  For once, I am so thankful for all my training in 100+ temps!  Score one for ole Jac’o!  🙂  But for the runners that aren’t prepared, I do hope they heed the warnings of taking it slower and drinking a lot more fluids!  Hydration is key..let me repeat, hydration is key!

Tuesday’s Have Been Reclaimed!

I started my new job today!  I gave myself 45 minutes to get to work because I needed to drop D off at day care.  Yeah…so, I got to work 30 minutes early!  How flippin’ awesome is it that I can get to work in 15 minutes, even with a day care pit stop!?!?  Before my lay off, my commute was 40+ minutes one way!

First day on the new job went fine.  I did the typical “first day” stuff since all my computer access hasn’t been completed.  I read the processing manual, opened the mail, and did some filing.  I actually like filing, I find it to be very therapeutic – and it beat the hell out of sitting on my couch, waiting for the phone to ring!

Trust me when I tell you that I resisted all temptation to randomly tell people around the office, “You may not know it now…but you’re going to love me. I am an awesome co-worker. I have some co-workers I could refer you to if you don’t believe me!”  Do you think that would have been too much?  I wasn’t so sure so I postponed my campaign!

I’m glad I had the presence of mind this morning to get dinner in the crock pot!  I wasn’t off until 5 this afternoon (my hours use to be 6:30 – 3:30) and after my super-short 5 minute commute home..K, D and I still needed to go out for a 5k training run!

The run went well.  D cried less than she did during our run on Sunday.  Her constant crying and whining is driving me crazy.  I told her I’m never going to sign her up for another 5k again, to which she cried more.  I don’t get it!

Despite the tears, we managed to accomplish 2.31 miles in about 34 minutes.

Fortunately for me, D actually loved the dinner I made tonight, so no tears or battles there.  She has been super picky lately but she gobbled this up and asked for more!

Doesn’t look that exciting, huh?  It’s called Slow Cooker Taco Pasta.  You top it with cheese and sour cream and it’s fabulous.  It’s definitely a recipe that will go in to our “rotation”.

Cleaning out my…fridge!

A few years ago, a psychiatrist told me about a theory; when people experience trauma in their lives, the brain remembers it even if the person doesn’t on a conscience level…  So say you were 2 years old when your parents split up and it was around Valentine’s Day.  You’re 2, absolutely incapable of knowing what Valentine’s Day really is, and you actually forget, as you grow older, that the divorce happened around that time of year.  But ever since then..when Valentine’s Day rolls around, you just hate the day.  You could have the love of your life and all the happiness in the world but you cannot figure out why when Valentine’s Day you are just in a foul mood and go in to a funk/depression..whatever you want to call it!

I got laid off on a Tuesday.  Tuesday’s are becoming my “low” day in the week.  I don’t even think I make Tuesday a bad day on purpose.  For example, I jolted awake at 2 this morning and my brain immediately started flooding with all the fears and anxieties that I currently have.  I escaped to the couch as to not wake K with my tossing and turning.  I watched “Spanglish” on TV (thankful for some decent television at such an odd time of night) and just cried my eyes out.  Oh…wait..are you still stuck back there on “Spanglish”?  I love watching “Spanglish”…I think it’s a super cute movie .  Any way..I didn’t get back to sleep until almost 5 am and just knew it was going to be a rough day.

After I dropped D off at school this morning, I had every intention of coming home and going back to bed.  After all..Tuesday’s seem like a great day to spend the day in bed!  WRONG!!!  I watched “Real Housewives of NY”, declared those bitches CRAZY and got up to clean out the fridge.  After all, tomorrow is trash day and our fridge was in serious need of a clean out.

I didn’t bother to take any pictures of the before and after of the fridge but trust me when I tell you, before picture would = DISGUSTING!!!  So disgusting, I didn’t realize it ruined my lunch appetite until it was 3 pm and I was waiting to pick up D and could hear my stomach growling over all the noise of the elementary school children!  True Story!  I frightened 1st graders with the noise coming from my stomach.

Tonight, D, K and I went for our Week 3 Day 1 Ease Into 5k training.  We started with a 5 minute warm up walk and then:

  • Run 3 minutes
  • Walk 2 minutes
  • Run 90 seconds
  • Walk 2 minutes

We repeated the above 2 times.  On the first 3 minute run, K was not a happy camper runner.  In his defense, there is a heat advisory issued for Phoenix today and here we were shuffling along in the bike lane.  It was difficult to run in this kind of heat but we just took  it slow.  We wrapped it up with a 5 minute cool down walk.  1.7 miles in 27 minutes.  It’s important to slow your roll run when the temperatures are stupid extreme!

Organization is key!

Yesterday afternoon, K, D and I headed out for their 5k training run.  We are a day behind on keeping to our schedule, we were not able to run last Thursday.  Yesterday we completed Week 2 of the Ease Into 5k program.  It was very hot out but we opted to go earlier in the afternoon for our run so D could have some time in the pool.  She was not a happy camper and continued to run far ahead of us.

She would try to speed up to patches of shade and then linger there waiting for K and I to catch up.  In spite of all her complaining and whining, she did great!  Her ability to run nonstop for 90 seconds in this heat tells me she’s going to kill that 5k!  I’m really proud of K, too!  He doesn’t whine or complain while we run because he is trying to keep D’s spirits up – he’s such a good daddy!  We completed 2.37 miles in about 36 minutes.

But I guess she’s good at putting on her game face and playing along with her crazy mother!

Confession time, I did not do my longer runs on Friday and Saturday.  I stuck to the 1 mile and called it good.  I felt super guilty for skipping the runs, especially as I read all my blogger friends blogging about how awful their long runs were. I felt like I’d failed to be supportive of my running friends by not suffering with them.  Does that make any sense?  I cannot, cannot, cannot blow off my longer runs any more.  As of yesterday, it is 4 weeks until my next half marathon, Disneyland!  I want to do a 9 mile run this weekend and a 10 mile run the following weekend.  Then that will be it for long runs and I will taper in preparation for the half marathon!

I wrote in my journal every day this weekend, something I’m trying to do so I can get my crazy thoughts out of my head and work through them on paper.  I told myself yesterday that I might as well take advantage of this time off unemployment period and take care of some things that normally get neglected!  I wrote myself a list of 4 things to do today!

After I dropped D off at school this morning, I started working on the disaster we call a pantry! Took about 1 1/2 hours and now you can actually find things without having things fall on your head!

Last night, D, K and I went out for another training run.  K said his legs were super sore from Sunday’s run and I realized we failed to do what you really should do after a run – stretch!  Whoops.  We’ll chalk that up as a “fail” for this impostor “Running Coach”.

Our run went very well.  The weather was nice..for Phoenix in July.  We did Week 2 Day 2 of the Ease Into 5k, the routine consisted of a 5 minute warm up walk and then:

  • Run 45 seconds
  • Walk 60 seconds
  • Run 60 seconds
  • Walk 90 seconds
  • Run 90 seconds
  • Walk 2 minutes

We repeated that 3 times and finished with a 5 minute cool down walk.  We completed 2.21 miles in 33:54 minutes, a 15:20 pace. D did much better this run – no crying or whining.  She actually seemed pretty happy!  K was very quiet but he’s a trooper, running nonstop for 90 seconds is no joke and he did excellent.  Very proud of both of them.

For the Disneyland Family Fun Run 5k we must maintain a 16 minute per mile pace or we risk being swept.  I think we’ll be fine but I may have to sit down with D and determine which characters along the route she will insist on posing for pictures with and which ones we can skip.  I think I know her pretty well and can guess that Buzz Lightyear and Woody will be a  “must do”!

These were taken in 2008 and she’s still a huge, huge fan.  In fact, when I ran the Tinker Bell half marathon with M in January, Buzz and Woody were the only characters I said I would stop for!

After we were home from our run, I lead the team in some stretching moves.  It cracked me up to stand in front of them and lead them like we were in a class or something.

I’ve been absent from blog writing and reading mostly because I suck and have become so consumed in my stress.  I know that sounds awful but it’s the truth.  I don’t want this blog to turn in to my whining about being unemployed, that’s boring and unproductive!  I haven’t kept to my personal running schedule but I have managed to stick to the 1 mile per day challenge.

After I dropped D off at school this morning I dreaded going home to sit and be alone with my thoughts for hours on end.  I decided to swing by Starbucks.  I ordered a coffee and just sat in the shop for an hour listening to the hustle and bustle of people.

I bet people thought I was crazy for taking a picture of these flowers but daisies are my favorite and I thought they were pretty!

Even if they are fake!

Starbucks was a great distraction from being alone in my head – which is absolutely dangerous at this junction.  I’ve determined that’s also probably why I’m not motivated to do my longer runs – I don’t want to be alone with my thoughts right now.  I do need to force myself to get back out there and run my longer distances because my next half marathon is in 1 month.  *Gulp!*

A Family That Trains Together…

With less than 5 weeks until our next 5k, K decided today was the day  he would join D and I in our training.  The last time we ran a 5k as  a family was October 2011.  We are registered to run the  Disneyland Family Fun Run 5k on Saturday, September 1st!

It is hot as H.E.Double Hockey Sticks here in Phoenix.  No question about that.

It’s monsoon season…which makes it H.E.Double Hockey Sticks and HUMID here in Phoenix.  Ugh.

So at 2 pm this afternoon, we headed out for a training run!

I would have expected all the whining and crying to come from K today but nope, it was D.  She was very vocal about her displeasure.  “The sun is turning my skin orange.  It’s so hot out here.  Why are you pushing me?  I hate Phoenix!”  I continued to hand her water bottles, pour water on her head and neck but when she saw that the sprinklers were not on at the park…she was furious!  I reassured her we did not need to go fast, we did not need to push it, and we just needed to get it done.  K and I bribed her with promises of a splash in the pool when we were finished with our training session.

Multiple times during our training I had to distract D with conversations about how wonderful and refreshing it will feel to run in California.  I had to tell her to think of places that were cooler, like the beach.  That did seem to help!

Finally, on the cool down walk home, the whining and complaining ceased–a little!

Hello 60!

Yesterday D and I went to the produce market to buy some cherries (99 cents a pound, thank you very much!) and while we were there I discovered the market is now carrying the Vega brand!  I’ve been wanting to find a gel that is healthier so have been wanting to try these!!

I’ve read good things..can’t wait to try them out!

Today I had a very important interview for a job you might describe as my “dream job”!

How’d it go?  Honestly..I feel like I blew it.  I got so nervous and felt like I was having an out-of-body experience and wanted to slap myself!

D and I went for her 3rd run of the week following the same routine we did on Tuesday!

When we came within view of the park, D was super excited to see the sprinklers were on.  You would think that would have inspired her to run/walk faster to get to them but it didn’t.  As soon as we were much closer to the sprinklers, she took off

She did a couple of laps through the coolness!

That kept her somewhat happy for the next 10 minutes of our training but just like Tuesday, on the final round of the run/walk segments, she started to whine, whimper, and confess her “hate” of running!   We did 1.77 miles in 27:41 minutes.  She’s getting slower but it is hot outside.

We finally made it home and she felt fine enough to pose with me for an “after” picture!

In other news…I weighed in this morning!  Last Thursday I weighed in at 175.  Today..173.8! I have lost a total of 21.2 pounds since 12/08/11!

More great news, today marked the 60th day of consecutive running!  #RWStreakExtreme, a continuation of #RWRunStreak – going strong!
