Butterflies in my Tummy!!

Something rare happened at work today..I finished up early and thought, “If I leave now, I could get a run in!!”  I instantly got butterflies in my tummy as I quickly grabbed all my stuff and headed towards the door!!!

I was home in no time flat…you know, because my commute is super short now.  I dressed, loaded up my water belt and out the door I went.  It’s a cool 85* here in Phoenix, gorgeous, bearable running weather!!

For today’s run, I laced up my old Pearl iZumi’s and my feet felt like they were home.  You know what I mean??  They felt great on my feet, like they were made for me!

Didn’t take long to get lost in my thoughts…

  • Shoes feel good, but I can definitely feel where my big toes have made indents in the shoes.
  • Walking pace is a lot faster than it was a week ago..feelin’ good.  Muscles in my left leg definitely feel less tense.
  • I bet people on the east coast would consider 85* too warm to run in and here I am, thinking this is perfect!
  • Running pace is definitely faster, but there’s that pain again.
  • The half marathon is 2 weeks from Sunday..I don’t see that I’m going to get in a long run before then.  Maybe a 10 mile walk on Sunday to prepare?
  • A 10 mile walk, are you insane??   I’d rather run and suffer than walk…
  • Okay…maybe no rehearsal run for this race and just go prepared to walk the course..
  • Interesting, when I try to focus on my form, the pain is noticeable.  When I just lose myself in the run, I don’t feel as much pain.  Wonder what that’s about?!
  • Maybe I should do some Pilates tomorrow and give my legs a nice good stretch.

I ran/walked 2.13 miles in 27:01 minutes, a 12:41 pace.  Last Wednesday, I did 1.79 miles in about 28 minutes, a 15:31 pace.  As you can see, there is vast improvement from last week!

All in all, I’d sum up the run as this!

There’s improvement and for that I am happy…but the pain is still there.  So the run gets an “eh” ranking!

After the run I immediately stretched and it really seemed to release the tension I was feeling in my left leg.   As I write this post, I am following Yo Momma‘s tips to ice my foot!

I don’t know what to make of this mysterious injury I have but I can no longer sit and do nothing.

Do you get excited to go for a run?

Any fun plans for the weekend?

Have you ever done a half marathon you weren’t prepared for?

It’s Early…I’m Up..and other Random Thoughts..

Changing things up and went for a morning run this Wednesday since I’m normally wiped out by the time I leave work. I don’t like running in the dark but…you do what you gotta do..with caution, of course!!

Some random thoughts during today’s run:

  • I wonder what that flashing orange light is up there?  I could go that way and find out.  Um…hello?!?  It’s probably to attract you that way so the boogie man can get you!  Ignore the orange flashing light!!!
  • Aww…all these people in their cars on the road at 5ish in the morning..that use to be me!
  • Ha! I use to be jealous of the runners out on mornings like this…now I’m the runner out on a morning like this!
  • Speaking of “mornings like this”– the weather is fabulous!!!
  • WTH, leg???  You’ve felt fine all week and now you’re gonna act like we’re at the very beginning of this injury???  Why do you hate me??
  • If my leg would cooperate, I could go a whole lot faster. It is horrible to not take advantage of this lovely weather and run faster!!
  • Okay, so I have a half marathon in 4’ish weeks…I guess I’m about to find out what it’s like to walk 13.1 miles!!!!
  • Is this injury ever going to heal??
  • Maybe I should just quit running for good.
  • Maybe I should get a second opinion about this injury in my leg?
  • Maybe I should stretch more religiously and perhaps ice the foot?!
  • Why is the body so complicated?
  • Why isn’t this run over already?
  • K is going to KILL me if I get hurt today and jeopardize our plans this weekend.
  • Maybe a run on Friday isn’t a good idea?!

I ran/walked 1.79 miles in 27:48 minutes, a 15:31 pace.  Which is a LOT slower than my pace was last Wednesday. I honestly do not get it.  But I don’t have time to ponder all the mysteries that is my injury, I must get ready for work!

Have a great Wednesday!!!

Got any theories about my mysterious leg injury?

What is your favorite day of the week?

What’s the weather like in your neck of the woods?

Curiouser and Curiouser…and other Random Thoughts…

I was so busy today at work that I skipped taking a lunch and ate at my desk.  But then I ended up finishing my work by the “8 hour mark” so packed I up and headed out.  Normally, I would have stayed until my regular quitting time but since I had a date with the bike lane – I was really happy to be getting out earlier than expected so I could get my run on!!!

Can I just tell you how giddy and happy I felt racing home to go for my run?  Here are some random thoughts I had during today’s “supposed to be speed training” session:

  • Bald men in sports car convertibles make me giggle.
  • “We’ve become the walls we raise..” so true.  So deep, Matchbox Twenty!
  • Ah…I see the newborn pigeons are finally hatched just in time to crap all over the roofs in my neighborhood for the winter.
  • Why is it that I can seem to run the normal pace but my walking pace has drastically reduced?
  • My breathing is a lot more controlled today.  So thankful the lungs bounce back so quickly!
  • If you’re not supposed to drink and drive then how is it that there are so many broken bottles out here in the bike lane?  Or do people ride their bikes and then toss their bottles?  Or do people just hang out on the sidewalk drinking?  I am very curious.
  • The only crap part about putting dinner in the crock pot before work is that I am starving all day as a result.  So weird.
  • Dear Left Leg…you have never been a good running partner.  You’re the one always acting up.  Shameful!
  • I wonder if anyone just saw me totally rock out to that song?
  • Why is the grass at the park all brown? It was all green Sunday?  I wonder if it wasn’t grass but instead just green weeds?
  • I’m feeling very curious on this run today.
  • I hope that UPS man is heading to my house with D’s eye patches.
  • Hmm..I’m not liking my profile in that shadow.

I ran/walked 1.87 miles in 26:32 minutes, a 14:11 pace.  The leg wasn’t nearly as sore as it was when I ran on Sunday!

Do you have a leg that always gives you problems?

Do you giggle when it’s time to go for your run?

What’s for dinner tonight?

Do I Dare to Run??

I missed my chiro appointment on Friday because I had to work late.  So I do not have doctor’s clearance to run.

But…I’m thinking of going for a 3 mile run in the morning.  I vow to do the following:

  • Run slowly..it’ll be more of what I call a “runner’s shuffle”.
  • Head home the moment I feel any kind of pain.

I just gotta get back out there and run again.  The bike lane is calling my name – it misses me and I miss it!

Due to my extremely hectic work schedule this past week, I didn’t do any of the workouts I had planned to do.  Lesson learned…the last week of the month will require morning workouts – whether I like it or not.

Do you think I’m crazy to attempt a small run without doctor’s “okay”?

Nothing More Exciting Than New Running Kicks!

I had to leave work early this afternoon to take D to an appointment with her opthamologist.  We got good news there and I was relieved to hear it.  2 days in a row for good news…whoo hoo!  Yay for the home team.

After her appointment, we went over to my favorite running store, Run AZ!

I love supporting local, small businesses.  I bought my very first pair of running shoes here 2 years ago!  I told the sales girl that I didn’t want to stay in the brand they sold me last time, and the time before.  I am done with that brand.  She had me try on 2 different pairs of Asics.  Then she brought out a pair of the brand I refuse to wear again.  I tried them on, to appease the sales girl.  Even though they felt good in the store, it just nagged in the back of my head that I didn’t want to go that route again! So I settled on these babies!

Asics Gel-Nimbus 14.

I was stoked to see the store sells Honey Stingers!  These are definitely something I’ve wanted to try but haven’t seen anywhere.  So I picked up a packet.  They had a few flavors but I settled on cherry!

I love new running stuff!!!

Have you tried the Asics Gel-Nimbus 14?

What is your favorite flavor of Honey Stingers?

How was your Tuesday?  Any good news?

My Leg is Fired or Not!

I haven’t run since Sunday hoping the rest, icing, KT taping,  foam rolling and the compression sock wearing would beat my leg in to submission.

Fat chance.

Today at the expo I stopped by the KT Tape booth for more tape.  A very informative man at the booth helped me out, asked me about my “injury”.  BTW, it was like a stake through my heart for him to use that word – injured.  Am I injured?!?  I hadn’t thought of myself as being injured but I guess when you walk with a limp..you just might be!

So I described my leg issue and even though I talked about the pain starting in my foot, feeling it in my calf and settling on the inside of my thigh..he kept referring to the hamstring.  I had taped the back of my leg earlier in the week, okay, okay – K taped my leg, but it didn’t seem to help.  I love KT Tape…when I’ve used it before, it feels like the tape takes my little boo-boo and just holds it so tenderly, taking the pain away.  The guy at the booth told me to be sure to place the tape directly over the pain in my leg and use more than 1 piece if I don’t feel that relief.  So..I can’t wait to shower and strike the pose for K to administer new tape to my leg!

We run the Cars Land 5K Rally in the early morning.  D is finally excited for the race.  Yay!!!  I may not be back for a blog posting until after the weekend but if you’re following me on Twitter @RunsInBikeLane then you can keep up with me on our adventures.

Oh!  The weather here in So CA is actually rather warm and a lot of runners seem really concerned about the heat.  For once, I am so thankful for all my training in 100+ temps!  Score one for ole Jac’o!  🙂  But for the runners that aren’t prepared, I do hope they heed the warnings of taking it slower and drinking a lot more fluids!  Hydration is key..let me repeat, hydration is key!

Hope you all have a great weekend!!!

Are you running any races this weekend?

Are you on Twitter?

What’s the weather like where you are?

She’s Crafty!

M is the kind of person that if she can make something herself, she will.

I’m the kind of person that if I can buy something instead of making it, I will.

I’m not crafty.

M is very crafty.

When M saw the cost of pretty, sparkly, running skirts, she gasped and refused to pay that for something she said she could “make for a fraction of the price.”

M happily volunteered to put my money where her mouth is.

She made me this!

My VERY first pretty, sparkly skirt to wear to a race!!!  Originally, I was going to dress in full costume for the Disneyland half marathon but life has a way of getting in the way and so we’re resigned to just the skirt.  But the skirt is FABULOUS!!!!!   I am really excited to wear it.  I will feel like M is right there with me every step of the Disneyland half marathon on Sunday!!!

In other news…my left leg is not feeling better.  I repeat, my left leg is not feeling better.  I thought a couple of days of rest would be all it took.  NOT!!!!  (Did I just show my age with the “NOT!!!!”?)   I was whining to M tonight about my leg issue and she asked what I was going to do, to which I responded I may not race on Sunday since I “already have the medal”. It was like an out of body experience when the words flew from my mouth and good thing M was there to call me on it – Who was I and what had I done with Jac??  Anyone that knows me knows I will pursue that bling like a boss!  True Story!!!

Seriously though, I always seem to get “injured” before a big race.  What is up with that, Willis?  (Again, age shining through?!?)

So..between now and Sunday I will be rolling, icing, taping, compression sock wearing, massaging, and willing my stupid freakin’ leg to get in line or GET CUT OFF!!!!

Why aren’t any of you running the Disneyland half marathon this weekend?

Are you like me or M?  Do you craft or not?

Do you race in a pretty, sparkly skirt your bestie made for you?

After 90 Days the Streak Comes to an End

After my run yesterday, I was pretty sore.  I also noticed I had some pain near my groin and hamstring.

This morning, the pain is still there.  So much so I’m completely taped up for the areas I’m feeling pain.

(I love KT Tape and I swear by it.  I keep myself in full stock of it.)

D and K need to do a training run for this Saturday’s Disneyland Family Fun Run 5k and I have decided they’ll be doing the training alone.  My running streak is over.  I think runners can run through soreness but I don’t think they should ever run through pain.  Every time I go from a sitting to standing position, I feel nothing but pain shooting down my left leg.

So, ladies and gentlemen, this concludes Jac’s Runner’s World Summer Running Streak.  I had a solid 90 days, much more than I ever imagined I’d be able to do.  If the pain goes away, I may return to the (at least) 1 mile per day tomorrow.  For today, I’m going to rest, ice, tape and stretch.

Surprisingly, I’m not devastated about the end of my streak.  I think it’s more important I rest than to risk not being able to fully participate in next week’s races.

Do you use KT Tape?

Do you run through legitimate physical pain?

How’s your Sunday going?

This is What a Hot Mess Looks Like!

With the Disneyland half marathon next weekend and my training plan derailed, I think we were all in agreement that a 10 mile run this weekend was necessary.  I wasn’t thrilled when the alarm sounded at 5:30 this morning but you do what you gotta do.

I checked Twitter last night and saw that Melissa over at Run Scoots Run was going to be heading out for a 4 hour run this morning. She has a way of challenging me to not call it quits on my own ridiculousness, because my ridiculousness is nowhere near her ridiculousness.  Since she was going to run 4 hours, I couldn’t really blow off my measly 2 hour run…because at least it wasn’t 4 hours!  ha!

During the hotter months of the year in Phoenix, I do my long runs close to home so I can refill my water bottles.  Today I ran out of water after 6 miles.  Do you know how hard it is to go in to an air conditioned house and stay motivated to get back outside and finish the run?  It’s torture!!!

Fortunately for me, the final 4 miles seemed to go by faster than the first 6.  I took this picture on the last .20 miles during my recovery walk.  I couldn’t find my visor this morning so I had to kick it with my sweat band.  Seriously, this is what a hot mess looks like!

Once I was home, I took a more posed picture but…I still think the hot messness shines through!

Results from today’s run!

I quickly made myself some chocolate milk and poured myself a glass of ice water!

That chocolate milk didn’t stand a chance, I slammed it before it had time to let any chocolate settle to the bottom of the glass!

Now I feel like a zombie.  I’ve showered and pulled on my Pro Compression socks.  I have plans to chill with some lady friends tonight so I might have to take a nap this afternoon so I can stay awake later!   Sorry I don’t have any “random thoughts” to share with you from today’s run..I literally lost myself in the lyrics of the songs playing on my iPod just to get me through the run.

Do you run listening to music?

Did you get your long run for the weekend done yet?

What’s the temperature where you are today?

Tuesday’s Have Been Reclaimed!

I started my new job today!  I gave myself 45 minutes to get to work because I needed to drop D off at day care.  Yeah…so, I got to work 30 minutes early!  How flippin’ awesome is it that I can get to work in 15 minutes, even with a day care pit stop!?!?  Before my lay off, my commute was 40+ minutes one way!

First day on the new job went fine.  I did the typical “first day” stuff since all my computer access hasn’t been completed.  I read the processing manual, opened the mail, and did some filing.  I actually like filing, I find it to be very therapeutic – and it beat the hell out of sitting on my couch, waiting for the phone to ring!

Trust me when I tell you that I resisted all temptation to randomly tell people around the office, “You may not know it now…but you’re going to love me. I am an awesome co-worker. I have some co-workers I could refer you to if you don’t believe me!”  Do you think that would have been too much?  I wasn’t so sure so I postponed my campaign!

I’m glad I had the presence of mind this morning to get dinner in the crock pot!  I wasn’t off until 5 this afternoon (my hours use to be 6:30 – 3:30) and after my super-short 5 minute commute home..K, D and I still needed to go out for a 5k training run!

The run went well.  D cried less than she did during our run on Sunday.  Her constant crying and whining is driving me crazy.  I told her I’m never going to sign her up for another 5k again, to which she cried more.  I don’t get it!

Despite the tears, we managed to accomplish 2.31 miles in about 34 minutes.

Fortunately for me, D actually loved the dinner I made tonight, so no tears or battles there.  She has been super picky lately but she gobbled this up and asked for more!

Doesn’t look that exciting, huh?  It’s called Slow Cooker Taco Pasta.  You top it with cheese and sour cream and it’s fabulous.  It’s definitely a recipe that will go in to our “rotation”.

How long is your commute to work?

Do you often search online for new recipes to try?

Do you like to file?
